Zombie Media: Circuit Bending Media Archaeology into an Art Method
نویسندگان
چکیده
This text is an investigation into media culture, temporalities of media objects and planned obsolescence in the midst of ecological crisis and electronic waste. The authors approach the topic under the umbrella of media archaeology and aim to extend this historiographically oriented field of media theory into a methodology for contemporary artistic practice. Hence, media archaeology becomes not only a method for excavation of repressed and forgotten media discourses, but extends itself into an artistic method close to Do-It-Yourself (DIY) culture, circuit bending, hardware hacking and other hacktivist exercises that are closely related to the political economy of information technology. The concept of dead media is discussed as “zombie media”—dead media revitalized, brought back to use, reworked. article Frontispiece. reed Ghazala, an Incantor, a modified, or “circuit-bent” speak & read, 2002, first developed in 1978. Thin-walled tube bending is still to be considered a new and advanced technique. The process has been adopted into several industries such as aero and automotive. This process may produce a wrinkling, bulking and tearing phenomenon if the process parameters are inappropriate, especially for tubes with large diameter and thin wall thickness. Push bending process is one of the methods used for be...

We report on a long-term cooperation between computer science and archaeology which led to new archaeological insights and new challenges in computer science. In consequence of this cooperation a Roman mansion (the Villa Urbana in Heitersheim near Freiburg) was modeled based on the excavation using methods of computer graphics. As a result a movie, approximately 5 minutes long, was rendered des...

The article assesses the impact of digital technologies on our understanding of film history. While the “New Film History” has revitalized the study of the cinema’s “origins,” it has not yet proven itself equally successful in analyzing the subsequent turn-of-the-century multimedia conjuncture. Faced with this challenge, the essay makes a case for a new historiographical model, “Media Archaeolo...
